DIY Sand/Spray Paint Auto Paint Job?

I have a '92 Miata whose paint is starting to peel. Given the age of the car, I really don't want to pay more than $100-150 to take care of it.





Has anyone tried to just sand the old paint off and then spray paint some glossy paint over the primer? Will it look really really bad?
