Auto Paint, Remove Paint from a Sticker?

My vehicle is supposed to have a glos sticker with VIN and vehicle information. Someone painted over it while painting the vehicle. Automotive paint. How can I remove the paint without destroying the sticker? It's a 1969 VW Bug and has this sticker in the door jamb.Auto Paint, Remove Paint from a Sticker?
I am not a bug man, (even though i like them) so i can't tell you where it is, but there are other places on the car that have the VIN. try and find those and not mess with the paint. But to answer your Q, use lacquer thinner. BUT mask off the rest of the door jam that is close and DO NOT get the rag wet just damp. It will take many swipes and a little bit of holding the rag on the spot but with time you should see results.
