I have a 1980 Chevy stepside with the origional factory paint. I want to take it all the way down to the metal and re-paint it.What's the best way to remove auto paint all the way down to the metal ?
Get a DA and start sanding.... I use 80 grit if it has more then two different colors(has been painted more then two times) then use 150 or 180 on the metal itself... When your sanding the metal itself you will need to change your sandpaper often, like every couple square feet or so... The metal will eat up the paper fast and will make the metal too smooth and the primer won't stick to the metal.... Don't get it sand blasted because it will warp the metal.... You can get it mediablasted though...What's the best way to remove auto paint all the way down to the metal ?
Aircraft stripper...a little messy though. Why do you want to strip it to metal? The factory E-coat-base coat should be good to just prime over.
Chemical stripper-it won't remove the metal the way sandblasting does.
Sand blast
