It looked like the paint on my car was scratched, then he just sprayed this stuff on and wiped off the paint from the other car like it was no big deal, and then it was all better. What is the spray that the auto body shop guy sprayed on my car to get paint off from the fender bender igotin
Called lacquer thinner.

Re-waxing is needed afterwards.

Friend should know. Also you are gonna have to cough up for reducers, washers, tack rags, sandpapers, masking tape and other additives so it isn't so easy as grabbing a gun. I found it cheaper to do my car with spray bombs than buy all that stuff. I still needed the tape and sandpaper and tack rags but 14 spray bombs later my car went from flat silver to Corvette yellow.(so under 50 bucks--compared to 250 for paint alone... and touch up paint was always available).Auto paint help?
A gallon is what you need and it would cost you about 300 bucks for some good paint. Don't waste your time with the cheap junk.

In autobody work, you get what you pay for. If you want to spend a reasonable amount, you will get a reasonable paint job. If you want the best paint, you will pay the most money. Depends on what kind of quality paint job you want. You could do it yourself with a coupe of rattle cans from K-Mart for less than $50, or you can get a really great custom paint job for upwards of $10,000. Earl Scheib says he'll paint any car for $299, but the last time I took a pickup in, the estimate was for $850, and that's only if I stripped to hood and roof myself.

You'd be best off to go make the rounds of several paint shops in your area and see what kind of written estimates you can get, and remember... the cheapest Is Not the best.Auto paint job?
well its all down to the exact paint finish your after.

Do you want just the plain black or do you want some pearl and flake added? The thing that you have to realise is that when changing colours the panel shop is going to have to completly strip your car and that means engine coming out all your door skins EVERYTHING.

For a good colour change paint job your going to be looking at around $11,000. Even at that price id consider that cheap.
Maaco offers a quality paint job for the money.

Paint isn't cheap, and labor is expensive. So how much of either do you think you can get for a few hundred dollars?

You could go Maaco or Schrieb, but expect the paint to peel off within a year. My exwife did the same thing you're looking to do, and after a year, the car was worse than it was when she started.

Save up, take the car to the dealer (if they have a painting department), and have them professionally do it. Questions About Auto Paint?

I want to paint my truck myself, And I am wondering what tools that I will need, I want it metallic black with two white stripes on the side (The stripes I'm getting a professional to do)

So what tools will I need, where can I get them, where can I find a tutorial on how to do it, and can anyone refer a good site for purchasing Metallic Black Auto Paint.

Thanks :-), Im Bustin my *** restoring this vehicle and i really need some helpQuestions About Auto Paint?
As already mentioned, D/A, air board, numerous long boards and blocks, gun, adequate compressor, body hammers, dollies, tack cloths, buffer, a seemingly endless supply of various grit papers, etc. and most importantly the best air filter and dryer that you can afford for the compressor. Oil, moisture, and dirt in your air supply will cause more problems than you could ever imagine. Just as an aside, you may want to seriously re-think painting it black. Unless the bodywork and paint prep are both close to flawless, black will show every imperfection, regardless of how minor it looked in prep.Questions About Auto Paint?
youll need a da sander(dual action), air compressor, i recomend a hvlp spray gun and a manual about auto body, paint, from hp manuals. it will probly run you close to 500 dollars for this job of you already have an air compresor.
    wow some interesting responses.

well bubba check it you need a dual stage air compressor lets say you can maybe get a decent one rebuilt for 150 now you need to go to harbor freight and get a da, paint gun fittings, sanding block hmmm about 150, you can get some valspar 2 stage or 1 stage for your paint disturiotor for hmmm 100-200 for the car you need somne 320 and 400 sand paper. now this is hard to say how much you need a roll is about 34 bucks you need some red scotchbrite and 1 piece of light grey.

2 rolls of tape 5 bucks each and then get some old newspaper for the masking

are ya getting the picture this is a complicated and bubba these are my prices i paint with my sata rp 3000 thats 4-600 a pop.

do you have a place (a paint booth) or a place in the country you can paint??

you can go to a shop in your town and ask to rent there booth for the weekend or night. tell them what you want to do and that you want to do it yourself. small shops are best for this. guess what some of them will let you park your truck there to the side for a rental space (like 50 bucks or 100) and you get to use there compressor. the really nicething here is if your not a pest and you really are trying to mask , do the body work and paint it, some of us will come over and teach and maybe help you, and maybe you will be offered a job.

the saftey stuff like gloves respirators and such such will runn you at least 100 bucks

really you are look at at spending 1k to do it yourself when 1k cash(if you do the disassembleing and sanding and start the masking and dio the detail) will get you a 3k paint job. its oct and theres most places are slowing down right now and if you go to a local shop that is CLEAN and has some pimp things im sure they will help you out.

dupont has a how too book it works for all paints for the most part. if you are going to do this yourself id just stick with a solid color no metallics or pearls. i might check amazon.com for a how2 book.
Hey, I painted a car once and I will never do it again. But it鈥檚 worth doing for yourself. I wish I had asked first. I thought it was like TV just sand it and spray some paint. You will need an air board, also called an inline sander this will help you out on the long flat areas of the truck. If you have a compressor make sure that it will run the gun you get. I rented the whole thing gun, compressor and sanders. It cost me 200 for the week.

Make your own paint booth it鈥檚 worth it. I used plastic and pvc that I had already. The first time I painted it I did not use a booth as you see I said the first time.

Sand sand and sand some more. I saw that on speed TV when you think you are done sanding keep sanding. Use the finest paper you can get. I asked at my local parts store and they told me about the dry sand then the wet sand then the dry and then the wet again. Even though I thought I was done sanding I wasn鈥檛, hence the second time I painted it I sanded twice as much.

I got a video (from the back of hot rod) before I painted it the second time. I watched it over and over while I sanded.

I used an enamel paint so I had some orange peel the second time around that I had to buff out. (Oh yeah better get a Buffing wheel too.)

The car did come out good finally.

No matter what else you do go slow and practice on the side of the garage. My wife wasn鈥檛 very pleased about that ;)

    Auto paint jobs?

I was wondering if Maaco does a desent job on full paint jobs. I dont want to spend a ton of money for a good paint job.Auto paint jobs?
'Good' is a very relative term. A $500 paint job is probably better than a 50$ paint job done with a brush by some homeless guy -- but not much. An industry standard 'good' paint job will run you about $2,800 and I don't think Maaco can even come close to that in quality. However, considering what their paint jobs cost it really isn't a bad deal. It really all comes down to how good you want your car to look. If you have a ten year old Cavalier then Maaco will probably be a good deal. If you have a five year old Vette, then better opt for the high end refinish.Auto paint jobs?
You have to pay for a good paint job. I don't care what the TV ad says.
Maaco is the same operation as Aamco. It is a schlock house, expect them to paint everything including the plastic lenses. And it will look like crap, and peel. You will not save money, you will need to take it to a place to undo what maaco will do. So you will pay double, take it to a reputable firm, pay once and enjoy.
You get what you pay for. Dont' expect a cheap paint job to last or look good.

    Auto paint cost?

how much would i need to paint a chevy Silverado(1985) and how much would it cost to paint it matte black?Auto paint cost?
For this year it would not be worth getting a high quality paint job as it would cost about 5 times the value of the truck. MAACO would probably be best for what you are asking. They don't take anything off the vehicle (they tape everything off like handles lights etc) so you may have some black over spray on your moldings, lights, etc. I GOOD paint job for the above vehicle would run about $5K - $7K especially if you are changing colors. That required a LOT more work. I recommend MAACO when the value of the vehicle is less than $3000 depending on it's current paint condition. Remember you get what you pay for. MAACO would probably paint it for about $1500Auto paint cost?

Auto paint ? understanding different kinds?

what are the different kindds of paints u can use for painting a car.

like single stage and like different kinds of paints like Acrylic Enamel.

i dont understand the differences and im learning to paint cars so i need to learn all this stuff. is there a website where it explains everything. THANKSAuto paint ? understanding different kinds?
You are right, there are different kinds of paint. If you are just learning, expose yourself to German paint systems, like Glassurit or Siekens. They produce the best, most durable car finishes and from what experts have told me are the easiest to work with. Most American paints are some kind of compromise between cost and performance. Check out the paint jobs on later model Chryslers (to be read Daimler). You can tell instantly that there is something special about their paint systems.

    Marine or auto paint?

I have a fiberglass boat im restoring. Im wanting to know if i can use good auto paint with a clear coat or do you have to use marine paint? my boat is in water maybe in water 2-3 days at a time, 3-4 times a year. Not alot. Also while doing some sanding ive noticed hair cracks(like stress cracks throughout the boat) in the fiberglass, is this something i should be worried about. Who ever owned boat before me looks like the slapped a sloppy paint job on it and painted over everything. I tested a area with some filler and primer seems that cracks cover with little work.Marine or auto paint?
marine paints %26amp; other products sold here:Marine or auto paint?
awlgrip the hull. It is the best thing for it and will not have to be redone for many years.
Check out DuPont Imron paints, I think you will be happy with that. Also you won't have to clear coat it.

You will have to spray it with a gun and watch out for the fumes very bad for you.

the cracks are jelcoat cracks from to much sun, you need to get a gelcoat repair kit try Boatersworld.com ?

    http://www.boatersworld.com/resin-filler鈥?/a>
you def have to use marine paint. Anything else will not only fade but also attract alge
Most boats are not painted but the color is manufactured in the gelcoat. But you can prep it and paint it just like they would a fiberglass car. Before sanding make sure you use a good degeaser and wax remover
May I suggest that, as it is a fiberglass vessel, then why don't you see about cleaning off the paint and reapplying ';gelcoat';, which was the original finish on the vessel.

It is far superior to just painting.

A local fiberglass business should be able to advise better on costs, etc., and they should also be able to advise if those cracks are from 'osmosis', which is a rot in the fiberglass.
Not mentioned in any of the other posts...gel coat cracks are also caused by it being applied to thick and not being able to flex with the fiberglass. Stress,(rough water is one example) exposure, etc. can cause/create cracks in gel coat. Also no one else mentioned wet sanding your present finish before redoing the paint job. I would also strongly suggest you reapply the gel coat...it is done for a reason, it acts the same way as the clear coat finish on the automotive paint. Also USE marine paint. Call a reputable marine repair facility and ask them for a recommendation.
I just painted my boat. It is aluminum though. I was an auto painter for about 5 years, and I do know automotive paint is pretty durable. I am not familiar with marine paint, how much it costs, or how durable. But when I bought the paint at the paint supply store, I asked about marine paint, and he said auto paint would be the best bet. I used Dupont. It's an easy paint to work with. I went with 3 coats of clear coat. I could have gotten away with 2, but I had enough in my gun for 1 more. I would be concerned about the sloppy paint job it has. I would recommend sanding as much paint off you can to get rid of the old paint job. Why spend your precious time painting it just to have it flake off from the last guys bad prep and paint job. As far as the cracks, you should be able to get away with sanding and filling them. There is a slight risk that they might come back or show thru the paint. The paint and supplies for my boat cost about 385.
I would definitely go with a urethane, marine paint for the hull. While Imron sounds nice from the other guy, bear in mind that the paint they are suggesting is normally for aircraft and a gallon kit alone is probably as expensive as what you paid for the boat used. Unless you have more money than sense, steer away from the Imron. 5-Star paints have done me pretty well in the 6 years I've painted glassed hulls.

Now as for those cracks, if you said it was just here and there, then I would have suggested a gelcoat glaze. But if they are everywhere, this could be big trouble. Fiberglass hulls can rot, especially if they are not sealed properly. But don't be confused with the term rot. Rot in fiberglass is where the glass and resin have become brittle due to exposure. Such as a hairline crack allowing moisture in, winter comes and it freezes. Ice exapands the fibers and cracks the resin and the process repeats itself year after year until the hull is re-finished.

Sometimes though, rot can be too extensive to fix. However, since you have already taken her out and the hull hasn't caved in on you, you may just have to do a little repair work over a weekend or two or three.

First off, strip off all of the paint to the glass. Be very careful not to sand through the hull or allow the sanding pad to get so hot it burns a hole in the glass. The gelcoat color I normally see on most stock, glass hulls is white. Usually a semi-gloss color, sometimes dull.

Next, you'll want to get some gelcoat glaze (which you can get online from US Composites Inc.) to fill in and seal those cracks. Be sure your environment is as dry as possible (humidity under 50% is desirable). You can always make a visquine tent over the work area to keep bugs and dust away if you are working outside. The glaze doesn't shrink hardly at all, so be sure to squeegee that stuff nice and flat and remove the excess off asap.

Next, you need to buy a filler primer. This primer will naturally fill any small cracks you missed as well as prime your hull for painting. The primer is tan in color. Sand it until it is really slick. I usually wet sand with 220 grit first, then 300 grit, then 400 grit. The gradual reduction in grits has always made for an outstanding slick texture on my primed hulls.

Next, be sure to use some ';wax remover'; (ask your local paint shop what brand they carry). The stuff removes any chemicals such as human sweat, fingerprints, and even chemicals from your breath off the surface.

Next, you are ready to put on your urethane, marine paint. The mix includes the paint, hardener, and reducer. Be sure to follow your paint shop's suggestion on this. They know their paint better than anyone. Just spray on 3 coats. Wait 15 minutes in between each coat as well. It takes about 90 days for the stuff to fully harden, but you can use the hull in a week. I would suggest waiting two weeks. After day 90, you are free to clean and buff the hull.

If you wish to make the painted finish smooth and shinier, you can use a 600 grit then a 1200 grit wet sandpaper.
NO PAINT WILL STAY ON A FIBERGLASS BOAT BELOW THE WATER LINE (BUT) JELL COAT.you WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DO THIS ( I ASSURE YOU)

Learning how to auto body paint?

I want to learn how to auto body paint, but I don't know how to get started. Do I take classes, find a shop to train me? Do I have to learn all about cars and trucks just to paint them?? Anybody have experience in this business?? Anyone know of schools that teach it in the Des Moines, IA area?? Any help would be great. ThanksLearning how to auto body paint?
You can either go to a technical school (a school that teaches specific things about fixing cars - for example UTI, Universal Technical Institute has a program like that), or you can make friends with a DIY car body man and he will teach you how to do it. There are lots of people like that who would love to have an apprentice - go to local Saturday-night car meets, go to mechanic shops around town, go to the local Earl Shieb or Maaco paint shops or the custom paint/body shops - you are bound to find someone around there that will help you get started. It's really an ';ask and you shall recieve'; situation :)

TazZ, Let me start out by saying I'm not mechanically inclined when it comes to auto repair. Last year I had an accident with my Nissan Pulsar and I wasn't sure how to fix them. I tried to search the web for help, but the procedures were way too difficult for my skills. I ended up going to the dealship for my repairs. The dealership tends to charge more than mom and pop repair shops, but they've seen all sorts of situations (auto insurance problems, repair warranty issues, etc) and they seem to always find a way to help me. Looking for auto body paint for a 1995 Dodge Ram 4x4 truck.?

The hood of the truck is dented and we repaired the dent we just need to match the color up with the rest of the truck.Looking for auto body paint for a 1995 Dodge Ram 4x4 truck.?
The previous answer is correct. The color code is in the driver's door jamb. On a 1995 Dodge Ram truck it will be a code similar to this: A26 or HV1. It should be proceed by the initials PNT (paint). So it will read PNT:A26 or PNT:HV1.

There are usually a few variations of the color (especially metallic golds and silvers) so you will want to go to a paint supplier who has a chromatic camera to take a ';snapshot'; and then the computer will match the variation and the paintcode to come up with the best color match for your vehicle.

You are also going to need some clearcoat. Since enamel paints are not used any more you will need to shoot your color and then your clearcoat. Most paint today is 2 stage. Yours is definitely a two-stage paint.

Good luck.Looking for auto body paint for a 1995 Dodge Ram 4x4 truck.?

DONT use 1600. thats pointless and does not have any effect on how the paint is ';smooth'; on the end finish, besides paint wont stick to anything above 1500. use 320 on da on flat panels and 400 wet on the rest. 1500 is for buffing the clear.

    Auto Paint Help?

I just wanted to know whats the BASE COAT price for a (i dont care about all that hight quality crap) auto/car paint job...theres no dents no scratches or anything..its maroon right know and i want to change it to black i just wanted to know the average price range (the cheapist way and a place to go)Auto Paint Help?
color changes are expensive because they have to do the door jambs and under the trunk and hood. for a color change its going to be twice as much as just a repaint. repaint can be had for 500-800. twice as much for a color change 1000-1600 and uppppppppppppppAuto Paint Help?
to do a color change and do a good job on it the starting price on it would be around 800,and it can go on up ,it really all depends on what kind of paint they use on it,to do a color change is a little more now days ,there's more work to changing colors on a car than just a re-paint on one, good luck with it.
Maroon is a bad color for bleed through, it usually requires a more expensive epoxy primer with a catalyst to keep the under color from effecting the overall outcome, the base coat/clear coat used all depends on the shop you take it to, unless you are doing it yourself, if so martin senor has some decent priced 2 stage systems, just have to check your area to see what is available.

Removing wood stain from auto paint?

    So... I feel stupid!

I sprayed my neighbor's truck while staining my fence with acrylic latex stain. Ideas for removal without scratching the truck paint??Removing wood stain from auto paint?
Rubbing alcohol will remove latex paints %26amp; stains from surfaces %26amp; should not affect the automotive paint.

Good luck...Removing wood stain from auto paint?
Go to an auto paint supply store. I have used rubbing compound and have had excellent luck on clearcoat vehicles, but when I used the rubbing compound on my Lexus bumper, it wrecked the finish on the bumper. You are probably safe with the rubbing compound, don't get too harsh of one, try a small spot first.
Go to your Local Auto Body Paint retailer (Not Body Shop)..They sell ONLY automotive materials ,so they will be a good source to start..Then Call your Stain Manufacturer %26amp; they will surely direct you to the right Place...

Since its acrylic latex you are Home free...Solvent base id different because the chemical reacts with the Auto paint finish surface almost immediately...Good Luck...No Worries....
rubbing compound... auto zone or kragens...orchard supply, walmart.etc

Can some auto paint chemicals in meth cause u to fail a drug test?

the reason i asked is we paint cars and my husband is in work release and they done a drug test on him and it came back possitive and we never have done this drug or any other. could it be some of the chemicals that are in the paint we use that could have caused this to happenCan some auto paint chemicals in meth cause u to fail a drug test?
sure can!! get all msds sheets for the products he uses and a good doctor can tell what is what.i paint cars for a living and know of two guys who got out of the business due to health problems from this.the chemicals enter thru your skin and quickly thru the eyes. Can some auto paint chemicals in meth cause u to fail a drug test?
No probablly not someone is probablly lieing I have been there. Good luck
Meth can be manufactured with over the counter medication.

Sudafed contains the key ingredient, and many things can cause you to fail a test and show up meth positive.

My suggestion is do not rule it out, it's possible a-lot more so than other narcotics.
After attending several seminars with local DEA, I can tell you it is totally unbelievable what is in METH, and I cannot fathom why anyone would put that junk in themselves, on purpose. Okay, each to their own. I was only shown partial ingrediants, for obvious reasons, and I do believe that what I have in my paint booth would set off a few alarms. Ever try Auto-Air paints? Newst craze for customizers. Water-based. I know, shocking, but it may be an answer to future problems. I have yet to try it out, but maybe in the near future....
The paint isn't responsible for failing the drug test. Your husband is not being truthful with you.
    Sorry but Yes they can.
Nope afraid not. Either the test was wrong or your husband lied and did meth. The active ingredient they test for with meth tests is in no way inside any automotive paint.
yes, they can, they show up as a drug to.

Does anyone know about auto painting?

Also I want to get my windows tinted, where and at what prices should I be looking for?Does anyone know about auto painting?
It depends where you live, expect to spend up to 200 dollars for a good job with a good brand of tint such as SolarGard and 3M, expensive, but worth it, make sure there's some sort of warranty, you never know what might happen, you want to make sure you don't spend your money for nothing.

Can acrylic lacquer thinner be used to clean metal in auto painting?

What I need to know is, Can You use acrylic lacquer thinner to clean the metal before you paint it, without causing any adhesion problems or any other problem you may know of.

Thank You,Can acrylic lacquer thinner be used to clean metal in auto painting?
OK just so you know lacquer thinner is as flammable if not more than acetone. Plus neither one of them remove wax, or oils. First you want to touch the area to be painted as little as possible with you bare hands as the oils from them will be left on the surface.

You want a prep solvent. Duponts 3919 or something = to it. Two clean paper towel type lint free rags. Fold them up, soak one with prep solvent, wash an area then dry it with the second rag. Repeat until the entire car is washed turning the rag for every or every other section. Once the rag has been used all around get two new ones. If you drop one replace it. Two times should be sufficient. Let that dry for a bit, then use a tack rag, unfold it, bunch it up, wipe down an area, turn it and wipe, turn it and wipe. You don't want to use allot of presser with a tack rag as it will leave the glue on it behind, then you will have to rewash it.Can acrylic lacquer thinner be used to clean metal in auto painting?
I would tell you to try acetone - also known as fingernail polish remover. You can buy acetone at any major hardware store. It would be a much better tool than acrylic lacquer thinner.

BEWARE - Acetone is highly flammable. So don't smoke around it or use a space heater. ;)

That depends on where you live. There are several ways to find a qualified repair shop. The easiest is to look in your local yellow pages. Another is to call the dealership where you purchased the vehicle and ask for their body shop or make ready department. Someone there should be able to tell you who they use or refer you to a local business in your area. If you were in the Dallas, Texas area I could do it for you myself. How big of an air compressor should i get for auto painting?

Im going to get an old Impala and fix it up but I want to paint it myself and I was wondering how big of an air compressor I will need. How big of an air compressor should i get for auto painting?
Even though you may only do one or two cars it would be well worth the money to get a decent compressor. A small one will run many air tools but when it comes to painting it takes more pressure and volume. The smaller ones will drop pressure and you'll have to wait to finish, by that time the paint will not flow right and it will create more work later.

I've had direct drives before, they are low end.I would go with at least a 60 gallon tank, 5hp. Don't go with a 110 volt, the motor works harder over the long end.

This one here is a good fit for what you need and is priced right.

http://www.squidoo.com/IngersollRandSS5L5CompressorHow big of an air compressor should i get for auto painting?
It will cost you more in equipment and materials than it would be to get the car bodyworked and painted by a good shop.

Compressor= $500 for a used one that has no filtration system on it

Quality Paint gun. One manufactured by Sata or Devilbiss will cost you no less than $500

    Quality primer %26amp; sealer gun = $300

    Air hoses= $50

Oil and water filtration system for your compressor = $300

    DA = $200

    Sanding blocks = $50

Quality paint materials primer, sealer, basecoat, clear coat and all the activators that go with it... minimum of $1500

Quality Body Filler and sandpaper = $500

You will spend thousands of dollars and you have no idea what you are doing. More importantly, you do not have a paint booth to keep debris out of the paint. Hope your neighbors don't say anything about you painting your car in your garage because if you do without a license and the EPA gets notified, you will pay thousands in fines. They will also require that you show proof of how you disposed of all your hazardous waste.
You're working backwards. First decide what paint gun you're going to use, then get a compressor that will supply it. Any new gun will tell you how much air it needs, and at what pressure. Get a compressor that is around 30% larger then the gun, just in case.
Get a 20 gallon one. But you will need a HVLP paint gun.

That will do this job for you but can use this compresser to run a DA sander or a inline sander!! These tools require alote of air to work..

    Good luck.

Removing tree sap from auto paint?

Anyone have any ideas for removing tree sap from auto paint finish?Removing tree sap from auto paint?
    No 9 sap remover

    Goof off

you can buy either at Wal Mart or an auto parts storeRemoving tree sap from auto paint?
Tree sap can be tricky depending on the type of sap and how long its been on the paint.

First, I try mineral spirits or something like WD40. Other ideas are 3M adhesive remover, Goo Gone, Goof Off, or other similar product.

IF the sap droplets are very small and hardened, paint detailing clay will take it off.

If the car is covered in a fine mist of sap, I wash it with a citrus-based cleaner sprayed all over the car, then washed with car wash shampoo.

One of these techniques should work for you, depending on the sap problem.
';No. 7 Car Wash';. That's the entire product name. Use a plastic-bristle-brush to help motivate things along.

    3M also makes a goo-gone style product.
Try diesel fuel, kerosene, or go to an auro supply store and see if they a cleaner for that.
    WD-40 works everytime for me.

any website for dummies that can show me easy steps on how to do the whole process the fastest...Auto paint scratches and chips - repair?
You can do several things to help clean up your car. Heres a few just off the top of my head.

    For the chips -

You can go to a dealership, or pretty much any major automotive store and get touch up paint. If you have a metallic color car, I will just warn you now that it probably won't match very well since there is a huge difference between a spray gun and a brush on paint job. Those brushes that they give you are pretty much garbage as well, I use a very tiny paint brush that I went out and bought (something little kids use lol)

    As for the scratches -

As long as they are not very deep scratches you could most likely get them out with some ';rubbing compound'; or ';buffing compound';. You can use a soft cotton rag as well. I personally like 3M, although there are many other alternatives to it since it is a little bit pricey. All you have to do is either use a buffer (there are many makes of them, if you want to get one it's up to you) or just use a soft towel. If you have a black car, you may leave some swirl marks if you don't know how to do it correctly. Also, you don't NEED a buffer to do this, it just makes it a whole lot easier and I think it turns out better in the end.

If you have a few deep scratches and still want to get them out, you can try using the compound on it, however if you see ANY color on your rag, stop doing it, this means it's deep enough that it went through the clear coat on your ride. If you feel really confident with yourself you can try wet-sanding with 1500-2500 grit sandpaper over the scratches to make them less noticeable or in some cases get them out. Just be aware that you are removing clear coat and don't want to go too deep.

After you use rubbing compound on the spots, you want to use some type of polish/glaze on it to shine it back up. Again there are many many different kinds of polishes so take your pick.

Afterwards, give it a nice coat of wax or two and it should be noticeably better!

If you want some more tips, hit me up on AIM under IAMAHOMEY, I paint cars for a living so I'll help ya out :)Auto paint scratches and chips - repair?

  • How to remove spray paint from auto body?

There is a product called quick clay. It is basically a piece of clay that you use with a lubricant in a spray bottle. It is amazing at how well it works. You can find it at any automotive parts store. Make sure your car is as clean as possible and follow the directions. DO NOT USE LACQUER THINNNER OR ANY OTHER SOLVENTS THIS COULD DAMAGE YOUR PAINT TO THE POINT OF HAVING TO GET IT REPAINTED.How to remove spray paint from auto body?
If the paint is overspray and on top of a finished paint job, the best removal method would be a clay bar. These can be purchased at any automotive store. The clay bar is used by profesional detailers around the world. It removes surface imperfections without damaging the paintjob. It is very simple to use just follow the directions. Do not just go out and buy ordinary clay though, it must be manufactured for automotive use since there is alot more in them than just clay. How to remove spray paint from auto body?
here it is,do not use lacquer thinner or paint thinner if the car has been painted before, you will ruin your paint job,try ';goof off'; but do a small spot at a time, if it doesn't work try rubbing compound, last resource will sanding the damaged area with a 1500 grit wet sand paper,do it really lightly then apply rubbing compoun after that finish it with any wax materials you might have on hand, good luck!
laquer thinner should do the trick..
If the paint hasn't been on too long try spraying on WD-40 and rub with a towel. If that does't work try polishing compound. And last resort to rubbing compound.
Use rubbing compound then polishing compound after.

I put it on the front lawn for ventilation (since I have no large enclosed garage space).

I got a large piece of cardboard to hold in front of the windows (in case the wind direction changed).

    Follow instructions!

    Shake can VERY well.

    Hold about 18 inches away.

Make sure wind is flowing in direction away from areas not to be painted.

I made long sweeps %26amp; tried not to over lap.

I worked from front to back.

By the time I was done, the front was dry enough to tell what needed touch ups.

This was a great answer for my problem, but it had an average car. Nothing special so I really could not have ruined it. So it was nice benefit that I actually improved the appearance of my car.

People thought I had begun washing %26amp; waxing on a regular basis. (NOT something I ever did B4).

    No buffing was required.

I was scared to use a car wax on it later.

I read a book for bachelors that had ';quick fixes.'; One suggested using an oily furniture spray to give a quick car shine. I got a few cans of ';Pledge'; furniture polish %26amp; thought that would be light enough to use on the spray paint. Surprise! It worked too.I would like to know what will be the results if i painted my car with auto spray paint?
hell naaawwww!!!!. hvlp spray gun if not in a spray booth in a well vented area with the dust settled [wet the floors and sweep out the water to make it so that the dust cannot travel]. but leave it to the pros. what is more than likely going to happen is that u are going to end up paying someone to fix your mistakes, then paint it correctly
Go to Earl Scheib and get their special. It will be way better than anything you can do at home and cheaper in the long run. Just wash it real good with liquid lemon dishwashing soup to remove all wax and oils of the surface the exisitng paint the day before you take it in.
no that would be a bad idea i work in a body shop and i have seen lots of cars that have been spray painted and they dont look good at all take it to a pro
Are you asking about paint in the rattle cans? Bad Idea. They don't have enough control to get good results. Stick to a pneumatic spray gun.
Terrible idea. Car's are not painted using rattlecans from the factory nor should they ever be.
it's extremely easy to spot a car that has been spray painted and it never looks good.

    let a professional do it

You don't want to breath in a lot of dust and paint fumes, do you?How to spray auto paint for amatuer?
think long and hard about getting into that...for any type of decent job, it will take alot of effort, time and money...it is usually best to take it to a pro...

u will need to make sure to prep the area by sanding and repairing surface flaws...lay down good primer, move sprayer from side to side evenly without getting the paint to run...more sanding...more coats...its a pain in the ****...just take it to a pro...the more coats the better, but it gets more expensive....practice makes perfect!

Hows Earl Shieb vs. Macco Auto Paint shop?

Whats better? I dont have too much money and i need a simple paint job. Macco said they will give the $400 special which will look pretty good.

Anyone know how Earl Shieb is and what price or paint job will be good.

thanksHows Earl Shieb vs. Macco Auto Paint shop?
i am a professional bodyman and have been for 30 years. i want you to do some math, when i paint a car, the materials i buy, my price is about $400.00. the standard flat rate for painting a car is between 16 and 19 hours at about $50.00/hr. buffing the car which is necessary on almost all paint jobs these days because of paint formulation will be another 8 hrs. i have no personal experience with these companys but i did have a manager once who managed one and what he told me was pretty frightning qualitywise. i also knew a guy who had it done and his paint blew off the first time he washed it. from what i was told is they have their own paint, which is poor quality, they have a very limited amount of materials they are allowed to use, which is not enough to adequately prep your car, they are on strict time limits. they do not buff, they barely mask. i was told that the basic package is almost break even for them and crap for you, but they rely on upsale once you're in the door. they probably spray well, they do alot of it, but prep is the name of the game. prep it yourself including fine masking and you might get a nice job, but make sure you're getting decent paint.Hows Earl Shieb vs. Macco Auto Paint shop?
As Gary said...neither are really any good. All they do for 3-400.00 is a quick scuff sand, tape, mask, paint and bake with single stage paint....no clear coat and usually lots of runs, drips and overspray. Save your money for a real paint job or sell the car...a good quality job runs around 2-3000.00.
Macco used to be better. But it all depends on the shop. I have seen some really good paint jobs from both and some really bad ones.
It's not cheap. It never was, and it never will be. Expect to shell out a couple thousand minimum just for a decent paint job.

How much is a good auto body candy paint job?

what do you think is a good price to get your car painted? and where do you think i should i goHow much is a good auto body candy paint job?
If you dont have alot of dents and rust, you can get a professional job for between 1200-1500. A candy paint job requires alot of different coats of different colors to achieve that effect. It should add about 750-1000 to the price. It is quite expensive. Check with a local classic car club. Ask the President of the club for a recomendation for a good shop in your area. Classic auto guys have to be picky about paint and they will know who is good in your area. Good rule of thumb is to stay away from Chains and car dealerships. The best work usually comes out of small 2-3 man shops. Ask to see their Downdraft, Filtered paint booth. If they dont have one, leave. Good luck! How much is a good auto body candy paint job?
If you want a good paint job then don't go to MACCO. Check in your area for places that paint cars and ask to see pictures of their work, especially if you want a candy paint job. Good luck!
Minimum of 3-4 thousand, you can spend as much as 20 thousand + if you want.

  • Various Questions Involving Auto Paint?

    1. What would be the best type of paint to use to repaint my plastic motorycycle fairings gloss black using a gravity feed gun attached to a compressor.

    2. What is the best way to clean out the paint gun when im finished with a particular paint.

    3. What would I use as the top coat after the base color to get that glossy look of modern automobiles.

    4. What would I use besides massive sanding to get the scracthes out of my plastic they are deep grooves but i dont want to sand to much because the fairings are pritty thin im thinking bondo or do they make primers that fill in little grooves?

Any help would be greatly appreciated im just inexperienced and I thought my motorcycle fairings would be a great project since they are already pritty messed up. Also I would enjoy to hear any tips that would help me along on this project thanksVarious Questions Involving Auto Paint?
    1. use a primer/sealer that is meant for plastic. stick with the same manufactor for topcoating. If you are worried about flexing of the panel, you could use a flex agent but the newer paints should be ok, either for solids or clearcoats. Lacquar wouldn't be advised but is probably not available anyhow. Many of the paints today will work fine.

    2. best way to clean is to rinse cup, then spray cleaner through gun with either the same thinner/reducer you sprayed with or better yet use lacquar thinner. Also, best to disassemble tip and such and soak/clean

    3. Better materials (higher value) usually gives better results. Some manufactors are more user friendly then others. Go to paint suppiler and ask them and be honest about your experience. they should be able to help you. Dry time of paint, ease of spraying and environment will dictate what you need. If you have several locations to buy from, talk to all of them.

    4. best thing is to sand but use the least abrasive sandpaper to remove scratches. You will need to feather edge the problem areas. leaving the scratch or chip may show up later after paint shrinks and also the area may have some grease or wax that didn't get removed.

    youyr welcome.

You can spray the whole car with primer, but if you do be sure and use the sand-able type in case you want to more work prior to actually doing a paint job. If not ready to paint just spray the area you worked on. The main purpose of a primer is to seal the metal to prevent further rust prior to painting and to give the new paint a better surface to stick to.

use a blow tortch lololololololoHow can pine tar be removed from an auto without hurting paint job.?
There is something available, but I'll have to ask my parents. I had huge tar spots on my black car from being parked in the driveway. It was not an instanteous fix, it took a few weeks since the spots were so big, but it did not harm the paint on my car. I'll edit my answer as soon as I found out, I promise.
Fabric softner sheet! Dampen it and with a little muscle it comes right off. Works with bugs guts and road tar also.
I had pine tar all over my new Dodge Ram last summer and only one thing got it off (I parked under a pine tree without thinking). I went to a touchless car wash that used high pressure water jets to wash the cars. The pressure knocked off the pine tar without knocking off the paint. If you can not find a touchless car wash with the high pressure jets, the next best thing is to find an auto detail shop with a pressure washer. The pressure washer can do the same thing.

How do you spray metalic paint without leaving streaks (auto wise)?

Reduce your air pressure and open the fan. Spray a test pattern on some paper to make sure the paint is being sprayed evenly. (Not heavy on top or bottom) Then spray in different directions. Cris cross the spray path. Then on the last coat, back away from the panel at least two feet and spray one mist coat diagonally. And make sure you are allowing plenty of flash time between coats.

    Auto paint, repainting clearcoat?

I am going to repaint my clearcoat on the vehicle I just painted. the undercoats were great, but the clearcoat did not come out right.

The clearcoat came out in droplets, I am told this may be an effect of drying too fast, or improper technique.

I am going to sand the clearcoat,, questions:

1 does it have to be, or ';should'; it be wetsanded, or is drysanding ok?

2 what grit sandpaper should be used?

3 how much sanding needs to be done? in other words, do I have to sand smooth ';to touch';, or to where I can not see the ';droplets';?

4 Any clearcoat technique tips, using hvlp?

    clearcoat is ppg shopsline jc661

    thanks.Auto paint, repainting clearcoat?
    1. Dry will work, but I prefer a wetsand.

2 That will depend on the surface condition.

    3. Yes.

    4. Find what caused the ';droplets'; and don't do it again!

I'm not sure what you mean by the droplets, but I think you are saying the clear didn't atomize fully, or maybe you have severe ';orange peeling';. If using HVLP you may need to add some reducer to the clear as well as the activator. Be sure to use a motion that will give a ';full wet coverage';, not a dry spray, then allow to flash off for 15 minutes or longer.

In sanding what is already done, if you go through to the base coat, you will have to respray it (base color). Try to even out the clear with a 400 to 600 grit wet or dry. Any imperfections in a previous coat will show in a future coat. You can't ';hide it with paint'; that doesn't work! You need to get it down to a smooth surface. Spray at least 3 coat of clear and you will be able to color sand later and buff it if you want to.Auto paint, repainting clearcoat?
That was a pretty excellent answer.

One more thing to remember is to be very careful when you are sanding on the bodylines. It is easier than you think to burn right through the clear andthe base coat. If that happens you will be re-spraying the base and you don't want to do that.

I don't know how rough your clear was. I'd recommend that you re-paint in a good environment. I know it is cooler out now and you might be tempted to used a reddy heater or something to heat up your area. (I am assuming that you are not in a professional booth on this job) Don't! There is something about the exhaust of the heater that really fish-eyes the finish. Use electric heat and it is best ot do it in a real, heated booth.

But the bottome line to that was that you need to sand your old finish as smooth as you can or it will show up again as you add new coats. Depending how rough your surface was you might want to drysand first. But when I start getting to the end I like to go to wet sanding with a sponge/block and making sure the panels are all slick before I move on.

What is the auto paint that changes from blue to red?

There is a lot of them. House of Kolor offers one that is called Kameleon, but i think dupli-color offers a 3 step spray can kit you can buy. Also companies like Alsa Corp. offer color changing paints. Its a very common product now for most paint companies. I'm pretty sure PPG has one too, but don't know that name.

By the way ChromaLusion is the DuPont brand of color shifting paint.

my buddy had a black prelude and I used flat black and clear coat from rattle cans to do a fender and came out perfect

I used 2 cans of clear coat for one fender , and be generous with it . spray enough so you can sand the imperfections out with 1500 grit sand paper and then buff it out to bring the shine back

You dont need any wax..... the secret... Vinegar.... I lived in Germany for 4 years, it is the only thing that will remove hard water stains.... and at $1 a bottle.... give it a try you will be amazed. :)How to clean water spots on auto paint?
If you are just spot cleaning, try using WD-40; it works well to clean the mineral residue off. If you want to do the whole car, you probably need to use a car polish/wax to get a good job.
You need to get a thing called wax and wax the car. this will remove water spots and help prevent them reappearing.

    Mothers is a quality wax
Wax the car with cleaner wax.
CLEANER WAX. Be sure you purchase a wax classified as a cleaner wax. Some waxes are simply polishes but a cleaner wax is formulated to remove water spots, and other contaimanents in the paint. McGuire's makes an excellent 3step wax with cleaner polish and sealer.
Most likely the water spots you are referring to are cause by hard water %26amp; acid rain.

You can try buffing your car with a suitable base coat clear coat wax ,If you get the desired look just finish with a good polymer paint sealant.

I think to accomplish the factory look, would be a wet sand and clear coat.

It is a 4 year apprenticeship to become an auto spray painter.

The reasons being that there are so many things that can happen to freshly applied paint, and so many safety issues, it takes around 4 years to learn it all.

Most apprentices will start spraying from day 1, but that's the easy part, keeping it on the car in the long term, without complications is the goal.

So is keeping the painter alive, paint is toxic!

Besides Sherwin Williams, there is also FinishMaster and English Color.

You need to tell them what you are painting to determine the amount you will need. If you are painting the entire vehicle, then it makes sense to buy a less expensive paint, since the entire vehicle will be covered. If you are only painting a single panel or two, or a bumper, then spend the extra cash and buy a better quality paint that will match the vehicle without having to blend into the surrounding panels. I recommend a paint like Spies Hecker or Standox; both are high quality paint.

Does a visit to auto body shop for a scratch paint job makes an entry into car history?

My 2006 car, which I just got a fortnight before got a scratch in the side of the front bumper by rubbing against the side of the garage entrance :-(. This is my first car and so I am very very depressed. Does anybody have an idea regarding the below

    1) Whether the body shop will repaint a 1/2 feet by 1/2 feet portion or they will charge me for the entire front bumper?

    2) Will getting the work done from a body shop put an permanent entry in the car history?

    3) Any idea how much will they charge for it?Does a visit to auto body shop for a scratch paint job makes an entry into car history?
The proper repair would be to remove the bumper from the car so it can be thoroughly scuffed (sanded to make coatings adhere), and so coatings can be applied over the entire panel. After the damage is repaired the part would be primed and sanded again; then the new paint would probably be blended or feathered into the old, keeping it confined to as small an area as possible. Then, the entire bumper cover would be protected by a couple of coats of clearcoat. Some paint brands require an additive to be mixed with the paint to make it pliable on flexible and semi-rigid surfaces like bumper covers.

Insurance companies and police records are a couple of sources where VIN history companies like Carfax get their data. As long as there wasn't a police report and you pay the repair bill without the use of insurance, VIN history retailers will probably not be notified. Independent body shops usually don't report to them. However, that might not be true of shops that partner with insurance companies.

The job you described doesn't amount to much money - perhaps $250 to $500 - depending on what part of the country you are located in. The folks at http://www.SafeCollisionRepairs.com can help you find a reputable shop that doesn't participate in direct repair deals with insurance companies.

Please don't fret over this. When proper repairs have been performed, you shouldn't be able to tell there has ever been damage to the bumper.Does a visit to auto body shop for a scratch paint job makes an entry into car history?
i wouldn't worry about it being reported, and as far as painting, depending on how bad the scratch is will determine if they paint the bumper or if they just paint the spot and blend it in. if they got to paint the whole bumper it will be alot more than you think probably a couple hundred bucks. also if the scratch isn't that deep it may be possible to buff it out.
having your bumper repainted (not replaced) isn't going to amount to a hill of beans even if it is reported.

as long as no parts are replaced that is.

lots of people scuff their bumpers.

What type of auto part material would be easier to paint, polyurethane or plastic?

I was going to order a front bumper but was faced with more than one type of material to choose from. What type of auto part material would be easier to paint, polyurethane or plastic?
    Good question.

It depends several factors, such as the painter, the type of paint being used, how it will be cured, etc. If a body shop is going to paint it, go with the plastic. The ';plastic'; that you are referring to is actually a thermoplastic polymer called Polypropylene (PP). Bumpers today are made of PP for various reasons. In regard to painting, PP is very resistant to many chemical solvents and bases, which you would find in all automotive paints. So basically the paint will adhere to the bumper and cure (dry out) without damaging it. Also, PP is used because it will ';collapse'; and absorb the impact in an accident without damaging the frame. So if this is a repair job by a body shopw this is the best choice.

Polyurethane is used in many ways. It forms a surface that is much harder, more durable and very resistant to damage from the elements like water and oxygen. Many marine surfaces like watercrafts and surfboards are made of a polyurethane core. But once they are structually damaged, they're done and they cannot be recylced. Thermoplastics such as PP can be recycled and reused which is better for everyone in the long run. Imagine not being able to recylcle the damaged bumpers from car accidents! I could go on for hours about the differences. If your bumper happens to be a composite like carbon fiber , then you'd be choosing polyurethane. Otherwise go with the PP.

Hope this helps in any way.
